Schweitzer RG-8A “Condor” (1988)

Schweitzer RG-8A   “Condor” The RG-8A was developed by the U.S. Air Force under a “black” procurement program. It was a derivative of the Schweitzer motor-glider and was engineered and used to perform covert surveillance missions. Mission versatility was designed into the aircraft. The Coast Guard acquired two of these aircraft in 1988. They were used for drug interdiction, locating illegal immigrants, documenting fisheries violations and detecting the pollution of oceans and rivers, and on rare occasions for night search and rescue. Careful matching of the very high-aspect ratio aerodynamic design with the propeller, engine and mufflers enabled the RG-8A to operate with engine between 1,000 RPM and 1,300 RPM during the “quiet” mission mode. It was equipped with a six cylinder reciprocating Lycoming IO-540 engine rated at 250 horsepower but required only about 65 horsepower to maintain altitude in the “quiet” mode. The engine was highly muffled with exhaust vents over the low wing.  The low RPM propeller speed vastly reduced the noise generated by the prop tips. [...]

Grumman E2C “ Hawkeye” (1987)

Grumman E2C  “ Hawkeye” Contained in the Drug Abuse Act of 1986 was a provision for an the Coast Guard to form an air interdiction unit operating E2C aircraft. The Navy was to provide the aircraft and provide support facilities to operate the aircraft. Naval Air Station Norfolk was the designated naval support facility for E2C aircraft and became the initial site of CGAW1. A CGAS would later be established at St. Augustine, Florida for E2C operations The E-2C Hawkeye is an all-weather, carrier-based tactical battle management airborne early warning command and control aircraft. The E-2 is a twin engine, five crewmember, high-wing turboprop aircraft with a 24-foot diameter radar rotodome attached to the upper fuselage. It is equipped with an electronically advanced radar package. Gulfstream C-20B “Gulfstream III” (1985)

Gulfstream C-20B "Gulfstream III" The C-20B was a twin-engine turbo fan Long Range Command and Control (LRCC) was obtained by the Coast Guard in 1985. The G-III was the only dedicated command and control support aircraft in the Coast Guard inventory during its term of service. It served as the Commandant's and the Secretary of Transportation's executive jet transport. The Gulfstream III was designed as an improved variant of the Grumman Gulfstream II. Design studies were performed by Grumman Aerospace Corporation in collaboration with Gulfstream American Corporation. Work began on design modifications. The C-20B retainrd the Gulfstream II wing box structure and trailing edge surfaces. The inboard wing was extended in chord and re-contoured, to reduce the aircraft’s high-speed drag. The wing span was increased by six feet and five-foot winglets were added. In addition, the fuselage was lengthened by an additional two-foot section aft of the main door and the radome was extended and re-contoured. Aerospatiale HH-65A/B/C   “Dolphin” The twin-engine Dolphins operate up to 150 miles off shore and will fly comfortably at 120 knots for three hours. Though normally stationed ashore, the Dolphins can be carried on board medium and high endurance Coast Guard Cutters. The cutters are capable of refueling and supporting the helicopter for the duration of a patrol. The SRR is utilized for Search and Rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties, including drug interdiction, polar ice breaking, marine environmental protection including pollution control, and military readiness. Helicopters carried on Coast Guard cutters greatly enhance surveillance capabilities and mission effectiveness. HH-65As are made of corrosion-resistant, composite-structure materials. A feature of the Dolphin is its computerized flight management system which integrates state-of-the-art communications and navigation equipment. This system provides automatic flight control. Dassault-Breguet  HU-25 “ Falcon” The HU-25 Falcon Jet is a medium-range surveillance (MRS) fixed-wing aircraft that was used to perform search and rescue, enforcement of laws and treaties including illegal drug interdiction, marine environmental protection, and military readiness. The first aircraft was delivered in February of 1982 with subsequent deliveries of one per month for a period of 41 months per month for a period of 41 months. Forty-one HU-25 medium range surveillance fan jets replaced the HU-16E Albatross and the C-131A Samaritan prop driven aircraft in the Coast Guard aviation fleet. The Guardian's modern technology and design enhances its performance as the service’s first multi-mission jet. It is twice as fast as previous Coast Guard fixed wing aircraft and can get to the scene quickly to perform its role. A program, to upgrade the sensor capability on HU-25A aircraft resulted in the HU-25B variant.
