Vought O2U-2/3 “Corsair” (1934)

The Coast Guard obtained six Chance-Vought O2U-2 Corsairs from the Navy Department’s inventory; three in 1934 and three more in 1935. They were modified at Eastern Air Service, Miami. The overhaul included removal of til hooks, installation of dual controls for the aft cockpit, installation of Coast Guard radios, and engine overhauls.

The Coast Guard obtained fourteen JF-2’s. The first was acquired in October of 1934. They were designed specifically for the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard numbers were V-135 through V148 The JF-2’s played an instrumental role during the Coast Guard’s testing of air operations on board its cutters.

Douglas RD “Dolphins” (1932)

The Coast Guard acquired 13 total of four different variants of the famous Douglas Dolphin. They began acquiring Dolphins soon after the prototype model, named Sinbad, was introduced in 1930. It had an all-metal hull with room for 8 passengers and two flight crewmen.

A French designed seaplane purchased by the Coast Guard. Aircraft numbers V107, V152, V153, V154, V154, V155, V-156. V107 was purchased in 1931, the rest purchased in 1936. The Last Viking was retired in April 1941. These seaplanes flew out of air stations at Biloxi, Cape May, Charleston, Miami, and St. Petersburg.
